Doing Common Things In An Uncommon Way - Saint (Brother) Benilde Romancon FSC
Born as Pierre Romançon in France in 1805, the man we now call Saint Benilde Romancon entered the Brothers of the Christian Schools in 1820 at the age of 15. In 1841 his superiors assigned him to direct a new school that was about to open in Saugues in southern France. Over twenty years at the school he not only taught but served as principal, teaching young men and, ultimately, inspiring some 200 of his students to enter the Brothers of the Christian Schools. On the occasion of his beatification in 1948, Pope Pius XII noted that his sanctification was attained by enduring “the terrible daily grind” and, perhaps more importantly, by “doing common things in an uncommon way.” He was canonized by Pope Paul VI on 29 October 1967.
